The infamous Bowie knife is one type of knife designed to look as a sheath knife with a clip point. Colonel James “Jim” Bowie, the person responsible for popularizing the said knife created several types and variations of the knife until it was created to look as how it is today. The Bowie Knife boasts of such history. Many years ago, Colonel Bowie’s brother Rezin, created the first ever Bowie Knife in Louisiana and was smithed by the blacksmith Jesse Cleft out of an old file.
The knife created by Rezin and Cleft was first used during the Sandbar Fight, a famous 1827 duel between Bowie and several other men. The said duel took place in a sandbar in the Mississippi River. What made the duel even more popular is the fact that Bowie himself was stabbed while in battle and was even shot and beaten to death however, he still, miraculously found a way to win the battle, thanks to his large Bowie knife.
Years after, Jim Bowie redesigned the Bowie Knife to make it much better. The new design was created in a form of a carved wooden model in December 1830. This new knife was created by an Arkansas blacksmith named James Black who produced the knife as ordered by Colonel Bowie. This new version adapted the previously created Bowie knife but is now designed to have a much sharper edge on the curved top edge of the blade. At present, this type of knife is more popularly know as the “Sheffield Bowie” because they are most commonly used in cutlery factories.
After Bowie’s return with the modified version of the knife, he was once again involved in a fight against three men who had been hired to kill him. Even though he was alone, he was able to kill the three assassins with the use of his knife, making his knife ever more famous.
When Bowie died at the Battle of the Alamo, five years after, he and his knife greatly gained popularity.
Even after Bowie’s death, James Black continued producing various types of knives and made a really good business out of it. After Black died, his knives continue to gain popularity because of its quality. His knives are famous for its toughness and flexibility. The secret of the Bowie knife remains as an untold secret although there were attempts by Black, who at the age of 70 desired to pass on the secret to his son.
